Finding Comfort During These Intense Times
For those of us who are empathic and highly sensitive, it is easy to become overwhelmed and energetically drained by all of the intense energy flying around right now. I’ve discovered and benefitted from a number of life-changing tools over the years which I’m finding especially helpful these days. Since I know many of you are also finding yourselves stretched and challenged to the max, I put together a list of tools that I’ve found helpful and uplifting during times of sadness, anxiety, confusion, overwhelm and weariness.
EFT Tapping. I first learned about EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) in 2007 when I attended a workshop in Seattle. Fast forward to 2019 when I was in the midst of some intense grieving and processing a ton of emotions after my mother’s death and found myself needing a strong tool to help me move through my feelings. I came across an EFT video channel on YouTube (Brad Yates) as well as an app (The Tapping Solution) that I could download to my phone and both were lifesavers.
Guided Meditation and Guided Hypnosis. I stumbled onto another extraordinary, life-changing tool in 2019, and I’ve been using it ever since: guided meditation and hypnosis tracks. There are lots of great guided meditation apps (Insight Timer) as well as guided hypnosis videos on YouTube (Michael Sealey). Spotify has quite a few as well. I found guided hypnosis especially helpful because I could actually feel the negative emotions being cleared out of my body and my mind. The relief was amazing! I still use it regularly.
Forgiveness Work. I cannot say enough about the benefits of forgiveness as a spiritual tool and practice. I’ve used a variety of different tools to help me dive deep into forgiveness of myself and others including some that lasted a set number of days, others that involved writing letters (though not sending them) and still other others that were steps practiced in the moment. All have been beneficial.
Q & A Sessions with Your Higher Self. This is a phenomenal way of connecting with the Divine and expanding your awareness about yourself, your thoughts, your feelings, your dreams and intentions and more. It’s an ideal way to tune in with your intuition and inner guidance because you can see it on the page rather than struggle to listen within for the sound of your inner voice. With a dedicated journal, you simply write a question and then tune in and listen for the answer which you write stream-of-consciousness style without stopping, analyzing or judging. It creates space for some deep introspection and reflection.
Sun and Forest Bathing. I look forward to time in the sun and in the woods. It’s rejuvenating to sunbathe for 15-20 minutes per day whenever possible. Equal to that is time spend in the forest breathing in its strong oxygen levels. Combine the two, and you have a healthy blend of nutrients that will ground you and lift your spirits.
Mantras and Prayers In and/or Near Water. Water is a conductor. I discovered many years ago that saying prayers, affirmations and mantras while showering, bathing or near water in nature, amplifies the power and intensity of whatever is expressed. I always feel a shift in my inner state after I’ve been in or near water.
Spiritual Sponsorship. Modeled after sponsorship in 12-Step programs, this powerful tool is about meeting regularly with someone in your life with whom you resonate spiritually to share spiritual readings, insights, prayers, along with deep active listening and witnessing without judgment. This can be done daily, a few times per week or with regularly scheduled check-ins by email or phone.
May these tools offer you some respite and peace in the days ahead.
