ChatGPT vs. Intuition
Some reflections on how AI is impacting, and at times. even derailing our spiritual lives
I keep hearing stories of people from all walks of life turning to ChatGPT for coaching, mentoring, counseling and, believe it or not, spiritual guidance. Of course, because it’s free, and requires no face-to-face contact, or any real, deep or confronting work, it makes sense. Plus, ChatGPT is upbeat, kind and acts like a friend that knows what matters to you.
The problem is that while AI can provide some temporary relief, and perhaps a lift in mood because the person conversing with ChatGPT feels heard, it’s no substitute for real human interaction or the skills of a trained professional. All of this is blatantly obvious, though I don’t suspect this knowledge will lessen the amount of people who use AI in lieu of human connection.
As a professional that works as a mentor and intuitive guide, I believe this preference for AI is yet another symptom of our culture’s dependence on screens and devices. From a spiritual perspective this concerns me, because I can also imagine that people may turn to ChatGPT instead of cultivating and strengthening their intuition. The cost of that would be great since it would keep people in a loop of dependence on something external while ignoring the greatest resource of all: our inner guidance and connection with the Divine.
Let’s explore this a little.
What makes ChatGPT so appealing?
It’s ability to gather information from vast amounts of text written by humans, understand patterns in that information and organize and deliver it back in a clear, conversational way in seconds is extremely impressive. It’s a super power that makes using a tradition search engine seem antiquated. These features are great for research, organizing ideas, gaining clarity about complex issues and so on. It can also serve as a great sounding board for those that need that.
However, those features, while valuable, do not offer the depth or emotional or energetic content of a human-to-human interaction. Nor can they substitute for the profound insight, wisdom and empowerment that comes from cultivating and using one’s intuition.
What comes through intuition comes directly from our conscious connection with infinite realm of the quantum field, from our Higher Self and the Divine. It is our through line to our spiritual GPS that has been carefully designed to be aligned with our Soul’s journey and intention for this incarnation. It’s a sacred gift bestowed to all of us when we’re born. It’s comforting to know that our intuition always has our best interest at heart and can help us make decisions directly connected with our life path.
AI can never be a substitute for that. It can only mimic it, and sadly, seduce us into believing it can serve as our spirit guide.
The problem with that is that depending on an external source for guidance can be a significant hindrance to our soul growth and evolution. Using ChatGPT in lieu of intuition to receive guidance and make decisions, is like using a cheat code, which while offering instant gratification, will ultimately only lead to delays and distraction.
There are no shortcuts on our soul journey. We cannot bypass the inner work required to grow and evolve.
Clearly, the differences between ChatGPT and intuition are vast, and yet, the appeal of the quick fix offered by ChatGPT, and other forms of AI, cannot be denied or ignored. With awareness, we can have a healthy relationship with both. Having good boundaries with screen time is a great place to start. Cultivating daily practices that strengthen intuition can insure that we’re making space to listen to our inner guidance, and not giving our power away to external sources.
I’m sure this issue will come even more to light as AI becomes integrated into our daily lives. May this post serve as a bit of a warning not to be too charmed by the bells and whistles of this new “friend” nor lose our ability to discern when something feels too good to be true. It is our connection with Divine Intelligence, not artificial intelligence that will save us from losing the plot and getting lost playing with the next shiny object. Within that sacred connection, we can become aware and awake to our Divine Essence and remember that we are part of an ever-evolving dance of creation. What is artificial cannot even touch the mystery or majesty of that.
NOTE: I have personally used ChatGPT to help me with various business tasks and projects, mostly as a search engine, research tool and idea organizer. If you have used ChatGPT for coaching, counseling, companionship, guidance, or as a sounding board, I’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments.
